Metropolitan Natural Park
The Metropolitan Natural Park, a 230-hectare area, is the green lung of the capital and the only tropical forest located within a capital city in Latin America. Discover this nature sanctuary, right in the heart of Panama City.
Exploring the Metropolitan Natural Park is the perfect family activity. As the point where two continents and two oceans join together, Panamá is incredibly diverse. You’ll have to see it to believe it.
The Metropolitan Natural Park is home to rich biodiversity in both plant and animal life: 633 species of flora, including trees that grow up to 35 meters high; 283 bird species, 39 kinds of snakes, 21 types of amphibians, and 64 mammal species.
What to do in the Metropolitan Natural Park
Before entering the park, stop by the Visitor Center, where your adventure will start. There, you must pay the entrance fee and you’ll find all the information you need about the trails.
Ask about special tours and activities. The park has a busy calendar, and you could find something to make your visit unforgettable.
Metropolitan Natural Park trails
Follow one of the seven trails in the Metropolitan Natural Park to have the most fun. Each trail has its own appeal and level of difficulty. Hike up to the viewpoint, visit a lagoon, and be impressed by the iconic scenery.
All trails are marked and you don’t need a guide to follow them.
You can visit the following trails:
1. Mono Titi Path: Moderate
Have fun looking for squirrel monkeys moving between trees. The path leads to the viewpoint at the top of Cerro Cedro, where you can enjoy stunning views over Panama City, the Panama Canal, Casco Antiguo, Cinta Costera, Bridge of the Americas, and much more.
2. La Cienaguita Trail: Moderate
Challenge yourself to take the longest and toughest route in the park. When you’re at the top of Cerro Cedro, the end of Mono Titi Path, continue along La Cienaguita Trail to keep exploring and take on this family hiking challenge.
3. Los Caobos Trail: Moderate-Difficult
On a family trip with little walkers, choose this trail and be amazed by the green giant: the tropical tree Swietenia macrophylla (the mahogany tree). The trail gets its personality and name from this tree, called caoba in Spanish.
4 and 5. El Roble Trail and Los Momotides Trail: Easy
Both of these trails are flat and short, making them the perfect setting for the little ones to have fun while exploring nature. They can enjoy activities like looking for different flowers, mushrooms, and animals or trying to spot the whooping motmot—a colorful bird commonly found in dry forests.
6. Los Guayacanes Trail: Easy
This path is right across from the Visitor Center, and it connects to El Roble Trail and Los Caobos Trail. Challenge yourself to create your own route with the smallest explorers in the family and go from one trail to another. During your journey, something you must do is stop at Jicotea Lagoon to meet the visitors and permanent residents there—small animals like turtles, fish, and other species.
7. Dorothy Wilson Trail: Easy
This path is designed for people with reduced mobility. It is the only paved trail, with a play area, gardens, and tables to enjoy spending time outdoors as a family.
The Metropolitan Natural Park is very close to the center of Panama City. From the Cinta Costera, you’re half an hour away by car and less than an hour away by public transportation.
Several bus routes stop close to the entrance of the Metropolitan Natural Park. If you’re using public transportation, we recommend downloading the MiBus app so you can choose the best route from wherever you are.
