Diving and Snorkeling in Portobelo
Be sure to put Portobelo on your priority list to discover the underwater treasures of Panamá. Portobelo is the closest gateway to the Caribbean Sea to Panama City, which facilitates access to its beaches and extraordinary diving spots. Choose to stay in this Caribbean paradise, and enjoy its beaches and extraordinary diving and snorkeling spots.
Underwater
One of the most distinctive features of the Caribbean Sea is the calm of its waters and the great biodiversity it hides. The shape of Portobelo Bay, and its constant 80 ºF (27 ºC) water temperature, create special protection for the growth of several coral species.
Swimming on the surface or doing a tank dive, you will have the opportunity to see colorful reefs, such as lettuce leaf, fire, brain and elkhorn corals. You will also see gardens full of giant sponges and you can swim with turtles, moray eels, eagle rays and pufferfish, gummy squirrels, Atlantic puffins, sea lions, and many more.
Destinations
The most famous diving destination in Portobelo is Drake Island, just a few minutes away by boat. The reason this point is the favorite of many, is the explosion of diversity, and its intriguing history.
Legend has it that the remains of pirate Francis Drake's sunken ship have rested here since 1596 about 21.3 meters (70 feet) deep.
Isla Buenaventura is another highly visited destination, as it has 3 different diving spots. And in Tres Hermanas, is one of the deepest points in the area.
Other 5 points that we recommend for your visit to the depths of Portobelo are: Isla Padre, Maria Soto, Chicken Point, Sal Medina or Punta Sabanilla; And if snorkeling is your thing, don't forget to swim in the crystal clear waters of Playa Huertas.
In addition to these must-see points, we recommend Pared de Huerta and Reef 2 Reef, a coral restoration project, where scientists and volunteers have planted corals in order to generate new colonies and fight against the consequences of global warming.
Diving for Everyone
If you don't have a diving certificate but don't want to miss the opportunity to explore the depths of Portobelo, don't worry. Here you will find schools where you can do quick courses for short dives or complete your official certificate.
You can also hire a tour with them that provides you with all the necessary equipment and joins you on your adventure. The approximate prices for these experiences range from US$110.00 to US$280.00 for diving and from US$100.00 to US$225 for snorkeling. Tours typically include a tank or snorkel, a guide or Dive Master and boat, plus beach stops or different options to complete your adventure. You can also complete the package with underwater photos and videos, so you never forget this amazing experience.
Keep in mind that the specific place for your trip is confirmed on the same day of departure, as that depends on factors such as weather, water clarity and current conditions.
Although this is an experience you can do throughout the year, the rainy months, August and September, are considered the best. The hurricane season, to the north of the continent, takes all the wind leaving the Panamanian sea much calmer, which is ideal for diving or snorkeling.
Dare to be a modern pirate and sink into the natural treasures hidden in this corner of the Panamanian Caribbean. Discover the depths of Portobelo and learn how to protect our planet to continue enjoying it for many more centuries.
