Culture & History

Parks & Nature

The Panama Canal watershed is a unique ecosystem where the Pacific and Atlantic  oceans connect. Hike through the Metropolitan Natural Park, the only tropical rainforest within the city limits of a Latin American capital, or cruise across Gatun Lake surrounded by islands and massive ships crossing  the Canal.

 

For a different kind of adventure, explore the Bayano Caves or go birdwatching in Soberania National Park. If you're looking to go even further, visit Barro Colorado Island, one of the world's most important natural laboratories. Protected and managed by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), this reserve offers a unique window into Panamá’s biodiversity and tropical ecosystems.

Islands & Archipelagos

Just minutes from the city, sail to Taboga Island and its colorful village of San Pedro, or venture out to the Las Perlas Archipelago, where white-sand beaches and turquoise waters await. On Contadora Island you’ll find hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and beach clubs. On Pacheca Island you can go birdwatching with local guides, while Mogo Mogo and Bolaños islands are ideal for snorkeling and paddleboarding.

 

Between July and October, don’t miss humpback whale season in the Gulf of Panama.
