Bocas del Toro, in the Panamanian Caribbean, is a world-renowned surfing destination. Its waves frequently attract surfing greats; for example, Julian Wilson, Benji Weatherly, Kalani Robb, the famous Kelly Slater and many other surf stars who have visited Bocas to enjoy surfing and its vibe.
One of the main characteristics of Bocas is that it has a considerable number of surf spots, compared to other destinations in Panamá. In addition, along the archipelago you'll find all kinds of waves: point breaks, reef breaks, tubes, right and left.
Where to go
The main surf spots in Bocas del Toro can be found on the three largest islands of the archipelago: Isla Colon (the main island), Isla Carenero and Isla Bastimentos. It's very easy, fast and affordable to move between them, as they are located close to each other. You only need to use a water taxi, which can cost around US$1.50 to get to Isla Carenero and between US$5 and $10 round trip to Bastimentos and other destinations.
Surf and yoga classes and retreats are organized on the three islands, attracting practitioners and fans from all over the world. If you're not traveling with your own board, don't worry: There are several places where you can rent one.
In addition, many beaches have specialized shops that offer everything you need, from repairing boards and selling accessories, to the possibility of hiring tours and surf lessons. Bocas even has hotels dedicated to surfing, which offer everything you need to make your surfing vacation a success.
When to go
If you come to Bocas del Toro to make the most of its waves, the best months are from December to March, when conditions are optimal with high and constant waves.
You can also enjoy great surfing sessions in June, July and August. Although in July the rains are heavy, the waves are usually even better. During June and August, the waves reach about three feet (one meter), which is ideal for surfing on beach breaks.
And, although in September, October and November the waves are quite scarce, the calm of the sea is the perfect opportunity for snorkeling and diving. The marine life of Bocas is incredible. Take the opportunity to know the depths of the sea or make a good fishing trip.
