Worldwide Acclaim

In 2010 and 2013, Santa Catalina was the host beach for the ISA World Championship. The championship was so successful that Panamá decided to host it twice more on another beach and is expected to return as host in the near future.

One of the reasons why Santa Catalina is so awesome is that here you can choose from several surf breaks to ride big waves and the swell is fairly consistent throughout the year.

What to Expect in Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is a small, rustic, authentic community. On the beach and in nearby towns, you can find restaurants serving local food, rental homes, hostels, and small eco-friendly hotels with their own schools, surf retreats, and even yoga classes.

Plus, with the support of environmentalist groups in Panamá, many local businesses have joined campaigns such as “Shark-Free Ceviche” or “Bye-Bye Plastic”, with the aim of reducing environmental impact. Be sure to visit and support the groups participating in these and other environmental initiatives, and be part of the movement toward sustainable tourism.

Plus, when you book your accommodation or tours with local businesses, you contribute directly to the town’s economy and to job creation.

The Best Time of Year for Surfing in Santa Catalina

If you want to come and try the best waves in Santa Catalina and the rest of the Pacific coast of Veraguas, we recommend that you visit during the long peak season, between April and November. During these months, the rain creates super interesting swells and the waves get more intense.

If, instead, you come during the dry season between December and March, you may still be able to surf some pretty good waves. Plus, you’ll enjoy a completely clear sky, along with a very refreshing wind. This weather is ideal for taking part in other outdoor activities such as hiking and excursions to spectacular islands, including Coiba National Park, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Any time of the year is a good time to visit Santa Catalina and the Pacific coast of Veraguas.

How to get to Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is approximately 6 hours from Panama City. To get to the beach, you can take a bus or easily drive since the roads are in good condition and well marked.

If you decide to drive, take the Inter-American Highway to the turnoff at La Peña and follow the signs until you reach Santa Catalina

If you take public transportation, you’ll have to split the journey into two parts. First, take a direct bus to Sona at the Albrook Bus Terminal, and then take a local bus or a taxi straight to your hotel.
