Bocas del Toro is the perfect destination for your next surf trip. Whether you are an experienced surfer seeking intense thrills or just learning, this tropical gem offers you the chance to enjoy an unforgettable experience in the water. Here are some of the best places to surf in Bocas.
1. Playa Bluff
- Location: Isla Colon
- Level: Expert

Bluff, 10 km (6.21 miles) from Bocas Town, is one of the beaches that made Bocas del Toro famous among the surfing community. It is a very long beach, allowing you to surf safely and respect other surfers' space.
With a sandy bottom and waves breaking left and right very close to the shore, the wave requires less paddling. This makes it easier to catch more barrels, wearing you out less. But be careful, such strong waves can sometimes break boards.
This beach is super natural, wide, and uncrowded. The advantage is that it is very close to Bocas Town, where you can find bars, restaurants, and board rentals.
You can get there by bike or car. Although the road is not in good condition, the trip is totally worth it.
2. Paunch Reef
- Location: Isla Colon
- Level: Waves for all levels
Paunch Reef, a 10-minute drive from Bocas Town, has waves of different sizes, both left and right. Visit this beach if you already have experience, as it is considered an intermediate to advanced surf spot. This spot is well known for the left barrel it produces when the swell is big.
Paunch is also highly appreciated among surfers because you can book lessons, packages, and even videographers to accompany you. You can also eat or have a drink at some of the hotels and restaurants on the beach.
We recommend surfing with aquashoes or specialized footwear, as Paunch Reef has reefs very close to the surface, helping you avoid injuries.
3. Dumpers
- Location: Isla Colon
- Level: Advanced
Located just 15 minutes from Bocas Town, Dumpers is an excellent place to surf, but it is a well-kept secret among locals. For this reason, we recommend always going with a local surf guide who will not only help you gain the trust of other surfers but also show you the safe route, as there are exposed reefs and constant currents. The ideal wave angle comes from the northeast, creating a left reef break with constant wind gusts. We recommend this destination only for pros who know the area. Many love the adrenaline, but you must be careful not to get hurt.
4. Tiger Tail
- Location: Isla Colon
- Level: Intermediate and advanced

This spot has a coral bottom covered with algae, making it a bit softer. Still, you must be careful not to hurt yourself or damage the coral. What makes Tiger Tail one of the top spots are its left and right waves, with perfect conditions to catch one and ride the rip current. If it’s your first time at Tiger Tail, we recommend seeking help from a local surf guide. You’ll find food and lodging services right on the beach or very close by. To get to Tiger Tail, just take a water taxi from Bocas Town; it will take you 5 minutes.
5. Black Rock
- Location: Isla Carenero.
- Level: Waves for all levels.
Black Rock is 5 minutes by water taxi from Bocas Town. This is the perfect place to start surfing; it has several schools and instructors, as well as special conditions for you to practice until you become an expert. At Black Rock, right-to-left channels form, a favorite for many experts.
Be careful with its reef bottom, but especially with other surfers. If you’re advanced, remember there are many people learning, and you need to be patient, as some don’t yet know surf etiquette.
6. Old Mans
- Location: Isla Carenero
- Level: Beginner to intermediate
This place is perfect for learning because the left waves are quite calm. Although its sandy bottom makes it safer, you still need to be careful: since it’s shallow, the board can break.
This beach is also little developed, but in Carenero, you’re always a short walk from good fried fish, a cold beer, or any craving. Remember that in Carenero, boats can reach almost all beaches, so be careful not to get in the way when one approaches.
7. Point Break
- Location: Isla Carenero
- Level: Intermediate to advanced
Point Break is another beach that made Bocas’ waves famous. Located facing the open sea, it has consistent swells. However, the most special thing about this beach is its five peaks.
Point Break’s waves range from 1.20 m (3.93 ft) to 3.60 m (11.8 ft). With the right angle, you can make perfect hollow barrels for amazing photos or videos. Be careful, as its bottom is coral and rock.
8. Silverbacks
- Location: Isla Bastimentos
- Level: Expert

These are the most difficult waves in the region! Experts choose this beach to surf big right waves, up to 6 m (19 ft) from deep water. The waves are fast and wild and break several hundred meters from the island, over a deep reef. So, be careful with its holes and cracks. The strong currents crossing the area make the take-off spot unpredictable. Only the most experienced surfers should try to surf here!
A 20-minute boat ride from Bocas Town, this beach has no services, but it’s a short walk from Old Bank, or 5 minutes by boat from Isla Carenero, where you’ll find restaurants, bars, and hotels.
9. Wizard Beach
- Location: Isla Bastimentos
- Level: All levels

It’s no secret that this remains one of the least visited areas by tourists and most frequented by locals. Wizard maintains its wild nature, and the waves can change a lot depending on the sandbanks and tides.
This is a great place to learn and is quite frequented by local surf schools. It is characterized by always having waves, at any time of the year, even when there are none elsewhere.
If you’re a beginner, visit this beach at low tide; you’ll be safer. Wizard is usually quite empty. Its waves are small but very good, and its sandy bottom allows you to practice calmly. If you have experience, you can surf here without worries.
10. Red Frog Beach
- Location: Isla Bastimentos
- Level: Beginner to advanced

If you’re looking for excitement, don’t miss surfing at Red Frog Beach. After a short walk from the Bastimentos dock, you’ll find fast right and left waves breaking near the shore. It’s the perfect spot for every surfer.
