Take a hike on the Los Quetzales Trail, the famous trail that goes through the Baru Volcano National Park connecting the towns of Cerro Punta and Boquete. This mountain rainforest is part of the Talamanca mountain range, an interesting geological formation that contains incredibly rare flora and fauna, and a combination of good jungle hiking and tropical wildlife.
The 9.6-kilometer hike is an adventure of epic proportions, and will take you about 4 hours one way. The mountain-forest terrain is best suited for experienced hikers, and as always, we recommend going with a guide. On your hike, you can expect breathtaking sites, magical hanging bridges and, if you’re very lucky, a Quetzal sighting. The magnificent resplendent Quetzal is the most mythical and colorful bird in the region, and legend has it that it’s easier to observe them in the Chiriqui province than anywhere in its Central American range.
Getting There
The Sendero Los Quetzales links Boquete and Cerro Punta, and can be hiked in either direction. Start in Boquete to hike to the town of Guadalupe in Cerro Punta, or begin in Cerro Punta to conclude your hike in Boquete. Hiking in either direction is a great way to discover both towns. You can hike in one direction, explore the town and then arrange transportation to bring you back to your original point.
